Intermodal Transportation

Directed & Edited by Hillary Carrigan | Music Composed & Arranged by Skyler Hagner

Intermodal Transportation, a composition by Skyler Hagner for jazz nonet, was written as an homage to his lifelong obsession with transportation. The title plays on the dual meaning of modes - found in both transportation and in music.

Intermodal Transportation was created under the direction of Hillary Carrigan. Utilizing archival footage from The Library of Congress, the piece was cut from a single source filmed in 1938, originally directed and edited by Sidney Meyers. A film tinting concept, once utilized during the Silent Era of film, is reimagined with the goal of visually transcribing the music. This time, color not only paints each scene's mood but also works to distinguish different sections within the composition to engage the listener in a visual way.

Skyler Hagner and Hillary Carrigan have collaborated twice before on Frank R. Lautenberg Rail Station (2020) and SECRETS (2020).

A Conversation.
